Wat betekenen de rozen?

Sinds de oudheid is de roos verbonden met liefde, schoonheid en geheimen. De betekenis varieert echter sterk afhankelijk van de kleur – en dat is precies wat de roos tot een buitengewoon veelzijdige bloem maakt. Wil je bloemen sturen die echte gevoelens uitdrukken, dan zijn rozen altijd een veilige keuze.

De betekenis van kleuren

• Rode roos: De ultieme liefdesverklaring. Rode rozen staan voor passie en diepe romantiek, en zijn de voor de hand liggende keuze voor Valentijnsdag, trouwerijen en bijzondere gelegenheden.
• Roze roos: Drukt dankbaarheid, bewondering en zorg uit. Een mooie keuze als je wilt laten zien dat je iemand waardeert – zonder dat het romantisch hoeft te zijn.
• Oranje roos: Symboliseert enthousiasme, levensvreugde en begeestering. Een warme en energieke bloem die past wanneer je wilt inspireren of verrassen.
• Gele roos: Wordt geassocieerd met vriendschap, vreugde en warmte. Perfect als vriendschapscadeau of om een grijze dag op te fleuren.
• Paarse / lavendel roos: Staat voor betovering en liefde op het eerste gezicht. Zeldzaam en mysterieus – een ongebruikelijke en memorabele keuze.
• Witte roos: Zuiverheid, onschuld en respect. Veel gebruikt bij bruiloften en condoleances, maar symboliseert ook een nieuw begin.

Popular rose varieties

There are more than 300 wild rose species and thousands of cultivated varieties. Here are some of the most popular – both in the garden and as cut flowers. You can easily order flowers with roses throughout the Netherlands:

• Hybrid Tea rose: The classic long-stemmed rose with one large, well-shaped flower per stem. This is the type you usually find in flower shops and in romantic bouquets.
• Floribunda rose: Carries many flowers in clusters on each stem, giving a full and colorful appearance. Very popular both in gardens and in bouquets that need volume.
• Spray rose: A smaller version of the floribunda with multiple closely-spaced flowers per stem. Often used as filler material for an airy and delicate appearance.
• David Austin (English rose): Cultivated in England by David Austin. Known for its tightly packed petals, cup-shaped flowers and intense fragrance. Gives a nostalgic, romantic impression.
• Shrub rose: Robust and easy-to-grow varieties that are well-suited to the Dutch climate. Bloom repeatedly throughout the summer and require little maintenance.
• Climbing rose: Vigorous-growing type that climbs along trellises, pergolas and walls. Can grow several meters high and blooms abundantly with fragrant flowers.
• Miniature rose: A small, ornamental version of the garden rose – ideal in a pot on the balcony or windowsill. Available in all colors and blooms for a long time.
• Wild dog rose (R. canina): Found wild in Dutch nature. Produces simple pink flowers early in the summer and red rose hips in autumn. Occasionally used in natural, rustic arrangements.

How to keep roses fresh in a vase

• Remove all leaves that fall below the water line – these rot and contaminate the water.
• Cut the stems at an angle, approx. 2–3 cm – preferably under running water to prevent air bubbles.
• Use clean water and add the food packet if it came with the bouquet.
• Change the water every other day and wash the vase thoroughly.
• Place the roses in a cool place and avoid direct sunlight, heat sources and drafts.
• Keep them away from fruit bowls – ethylene gas from ripe fruit causes roses to wilt faster.
